  1. Animals were examined for clinical signs once a day until day 6 and twice daily from day 7 to day 56
  2. 1 Whenever the rectal temperature exceeded 39.5 °C, and/or babesiosis was suspected on the basis of clinical signs, blood was collected for blood smear microscopical examination and PCR analysis. A dog with a positive blood smear was rescue treated
  3. 2 A dog was removed from the study once a PCR and an IFA analysis were positive
